It's Time to Dress Up for Sping and Summer

It's time to start thinking about proms and weddings and other events that always seem to crowd themselves into your social calender this time of year.  eBay is a great resource for dressing up.  It doesn't make sense to spend a fortune in a department store for an item you will only wear once or twice.  It makes a lot more sense to check out eBay and spend half the money on the accessories so you can spend more on that great dress and shoes.

Gloves Have Gone the Way of the Dinosaur - Thank Goodness

I recently become the proud possessor of about a dozen pair of gloves.  Most of the gloves were white kidskin, made in Italy or France.  There were a few black pairs and one inexplicable pink pair of a color never seen in nature.  After my experience, I now know why that particular fashion is never coming back.

Here's a few of my realizations -

There are at least four glove lengths.  How did anyone keep track of which length was the appropriate length for the appropriate outfit of occasion.

Did it make a difference what the material was?  Could you only wear leather in the spring or cotton in the summer?  Did you only wear white leather in the summer, or were white gloves acceptable in the winter too.  Was leather only for winter?

Did  you need to wear a hat when you wore gloves?  How dressy did you need to be?  Did you only wear gloves with dresses?

How did you keep all those white gloves clean all the time?  It's a dirty world out there!

I'm so grateful that hats and gloves passed with the Kennedy administration.  I suspect that women who remember those days will never welcome the fashion back.

Did the Hourglass Run Out on Watches?

Over time, I've accumulated a lot of watches, both personally and for my store.  I probably own eight watches of my own, half of which were presents.  In fact, my first watch, an Elgin, was given to me by my mother, who actually worked at the Elgin factory in Illinois.

Of course, I haven't worn any of my watches lately.  Like in the last year.  What's the point?  I have my cell phone in case I need to know what time it is.  Or my Blackberry, or whatever electric device I'm currently carrying.  I think most people do the same thing these days, especially younger people.  The only real purpose a watch seems to serve is as a status symbol.  In that respect we've come full circle from the early days when a gold pocket watch was a status symbol to the Rolex of today.

However, you might want to consider that down the road, like gold pocket watches, those time pieces will become collector's items.  Now's the time to get them cheap to hold for the future!

French Scarf Clips - Who Knew?

I always picture French women as incredibly fashionable and chic. In my mind, the typical Frenchwoman is able to take a scarf, furl it around her neck and come up with a fabulous look.  Something I've always wanted to be able to do myself without much success.  So when I came across a French scarf clip, I was amazed that they would even consider using such a common item.

Of course, this is a pretty special clip, with oriental styling that really makes it an outstanding piece for a chic scarf.
